Cultivating True Compassion: Bodhichitta and the Bodhisattva Vow is a concise teaching that begins with a discussion of love and immeasurable compassion which is called bodhichitta. Rinpoche next introduces the reader to methods from the Buddhist tradition for cultivating bodhichitta. Here he distills the essence of Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, which is in itself a concise teaching. Finally, Rinpoche describes the meaning and purpose of the Bodhisattva Vow which is promising to stay in Samsara until all persons have reached enlightenment.
The book also includes a modern translation of the root text, A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment.
The Indian scholar and saint Atisha reintroduced pure Buddhism into Tibet in the eleventh century. His Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment sets forth the entire Buddhist path within the framework of three levels of meditation which is the source of the graduated approach of spiritual practice employed by all four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
