Mahakala is a practice done every evening in almost all Kagyu monasteries. No matter where Thrangu Rinpoche is --in a hotel or visiting someone’s house, he did Mahakala practice.

Mahakala is a wrathful protector who protects the Karmapa and his teachings. To do the full hour-long Mahakala practicewe should have the empowerment and transmission. However, Thrangu Rinpoche has adopted this much shorter practice to do in the evening for his students that does not require an empowerment.
