Mipham Rinpoche, a 19th century Tibetan scholar and practitioner, gives a definite explanation meditation of the Middle-way Instructions. For a few years of his life he actually stayed at the Ninth Thrangu Rinpoche's monastery in Tibet where he was supplied with materials for his prolific writing. One of Mipham Rinpoche's encyclopedic works on Buddhism was the Gateway to Knowledge and this text is from the Middle-way Instructions.

In this book of 127 pages Mipham explains the meditation techniques for developing compassion and how to expand compassion into the aspiration of bodhichitta. Bodhichitta is the desire to all sentient beings reach enlightenment. Once one has developed this clarity of vision enlightened wisdom begins to manifest.

This text gives a detailed explanation of how one meditates to develop this wisdom. I suggest this book to beginners because it covers in a very practical topics on how one deals with common problems in meditation––having too many strong continuous thoughts, becoming drowsy, how to deal with very angry thoughts, and the nine stages of placing one’s mind and so on.
